A lot of people we encountered who had been in Portland described it as a place full of “people who think they’re too cool, but with no clear reason why they’re too cool”. Luckily, our Portland friends didn’t meet this description, but I did feel that vibe a bit being in the city. We arrived at night to a warm house full of lively people and good food and spent the evening sampling some of the states newly legalized herbs. The next few days we had a more relaxed way of living. Granted, we’re on vacation and all that, but we haven’t had much time to rest in one place. It’s amazing how quickly you get used to driving 8 hours almost every day.
We ate like kings at my friends work, stopped at a great old camera shop, went to the fancy Lake Oswego and swam surrounded by mansions, visited a waterfall and realized it’s a lot cooler in the shade, and then on the last day ran all sorts of errands like getting sandwiches, olive oil flavored ice cream, flower, coffee, and a new AUX cord to play music in the car. Then we made a sharp turn from our previous western trajectory and began the first part of our drive north. About a week into our trip, on our way to Minnesota, Jerry was sitting in the back seat looking at our atlas and broached the idea of driving to Alaska… so that’s our new end point.
